THE LONG WAY
a Jonah Musical
by Matthew J Mortlock
Act One
Track - 01 - Act One Fanfare

Track - 02 - Storytellers Theme

Storyteller So, you’ve come to hear a story have you? Well I guess an old man like
me has a lot of stories to tell but I think for you a very special story
indeed and one I know extremely well. A long time ago but not too far
from here lived a younger man than me. A man called Jonah.

[Gath Hepher, a small market town]
Track - 03 - Jonah

Storyteller Jonah was a good man, a righteous man, a man who heard the very voice of
God. Unfortunately for Jonah that wasn't the only voice he heard...

Chorus Jonah tell us what to do Jonah
The Almighty talks to Jonah
We look to him to for help
Jonah, what a good man, our Jonah
Always here on hand, Jonah
Gath Hephers number one

Jacob Should I sell my goat, or sell my calf?
Deborah Should I buy this hat maybe this scarf?
Jacob & Jonah now you hear the voice of God,
Deborah So won’t you tell us please?

Chorus Jonah tell us what to do Jonah
The Almighty talks to Jonah
We look to him to for help
Jonah, what a good man, our Jonah
Always here on hand, Jonah
Gath Hephers number one

Yetta Should I let my baby play with dogs?
Leah I believe that babies belong in doors
Yetta & Jonah, tell us what would Yahweh do
Leah Oh Jonah tell us please

Jonah Yetta how can you ask such a thing? Really
leah I told her I said “Yetta how can you ask such a thing?” but oh no she had
to hear it from you... well 'you' I mean Him. And of course you hear from
him so she had to hear it from you. I don't know! There's no telling this
girl sometimes its like talking to a brick wall!

Storyteller Gath Hepher looked to him for help
Jonah turned to God each day for help
Jonah did the best that he could do
Every day the same

Chorus Jonah tell us what to do Jonah
The Almighty talks to Jonah
We look to him to for help
Jonah, what a good man, our Jonah
Always here on hand, Jonah
Gath Hephers number one
Gath Hephers number one

Storyteller Even though the town was quite small the people of Gath Hepher always
seemed to have the biggest problems.
Jacob Jonah? My chickens aren't laying as many eggs as they used too. Has God
told you why?
Jonah Jacob your chickens are so old no wonder they...
Jacob Yes, yes, but has God said anything?
Deborah Jonah? If my son strikes my daughter what would God have me do?
Jonah Surely you should tell him off...
Deborah All very well for you to say, but what does God say?
Leah Jonah, I'm sure my husband is spending too much time down at the bazaar. Has God told you what he's doing?
Jonah Leah! Your husband owns a stall in the bazaar. He should be there!
Leah No, no, what does God say?

Jonah All day they expect me to hear Gods voice
Each day coming with their problems
Tiny, petty problems
They think, all day every day we're talking
Just like Adam always talking
But Eden isn't here!

Jacob Jonah a moment of you time please, my wife thinks we should start
selling milk to the next village but I think in a time of unstable
economics ...
Deborah really have you heard such a thing? The sheckle has never been so stable.
Tell him Jonah as the prophet once said....

Leah Should I wear black or maybe brown?
Yetta Does god think I should always sweep the ground?
Jonah Should I always listen in their place?
Why can't they choose themselves?
All day they expect me to hear Gods voice
Wanting me to solve their problems
Every day the same
Can’t they make decisions? Really! Can’t they
Make their simple little choices?
No it’s always Jonah, please?
Tell us every day!

Storyteller As you can see the towns people looked to Jonah for all their
'important' decisions. Once word got round that Jonah had heard from God
life wasn't so easy for this 'minor' Prophet, but God was about to speak
again....
Voice Of God Jonah, there is a place east of here called Nineveh. As a nation they
have set their hearts against me. Go to Nineveh and tell them that the
Lord God won’t stand their wickedness any longer!
Jonah What! Nineveh? Go to those Gentiles? Those jackals! Why me Lord?
Voice Of God Jonah!
Jonah Can't you speak to one of their own? The king maybe? My hands are full
here.
Voice Of God Jonah. Go to Nineveh!

Track - 04 - Why Me Pt1

Jonah I know we're the chosen people but why does He choose me? And to
Nineveh!? Why me?

Why me? Why go to Nineveh?
Why me? It’s not like I’ve been before!
Why go? Why take His word to them?

I can’t leave, this I my home you know
Surely, there’s someone else to do the job
I can't go, can't go to Nineveh

You'll have to find someone else. I’m busy. I’ve done my bit. My calendar
is full!

Why me? Can’t He see my hands are full?
Why me? Haven’t I done enough?
Why go, why go to Nineveh!

Nineveh, that’s in Assyria!
They hate the Israelites they really do
Why me, why should I take the risk
And anyway what would this place do without me? There’s Deborah, Jacob
all their questions... they'd never survive!

These guys rely on me every day
I can’t leave, everyday they need me more
I won’t leave but then again He knows I’m here
I’ll go, but not there, to Nineveh
I’ll go as far as I can from there
Not me I won’t go to Nineveh!

Hang on though, there’s a problem....
But where, where can I even go
He's there! Here, there and everywhere
I’ve got to get myself out of here!
I’ve got to get me out of here!

Track - 05 - The Great Wide World

Onama Did I hear you're going on a journey? Where?
Jonah I, I don’t know.
Onama maybe I can help?
Jonah I don’t know how!
Onama I am Onama and I am at your service. My card!
Jonah On a ma holidays! You’ve gotta be kidding me?
Onama Honest Onama! At your service
Onama Think about the great wide world
Think about all that is known
Think about all your hopes and dreams
That’s what I sell
Think about all you could do
If you had a different view
There’s a hundred places you could be
Just leave it to me

Now, a young man like you, out on his own, looking for a adventure,
Nineveh’s nice.

Jonah No, not Nineveh.
I’ve gotta get away from here
I’ve got to find a new horizon
I want to see a different sky up there

Onama Umm... let me see

How about this place Damascus
How do I know it? Don’t ask us
But it’s a blinding place this time of year
A real eye-opener of a town

Jonah No

Onama How about the seaside Joppa
Lovely beaches and sea fishing
The gateway to every foreign land

And come to think of it only one leper.

Jonah How far away is that?
Onama A week away by foot, quicker by donkey.
Jonah No, not far enough.
Onama Not far enough he says, well if its distance you want

There’s this place you can’t get further
Its call Tarshish but I’ve never been there
If its distance that you want well I guess it’s your place
It must be nice even the maps stop there.

Jonah Tarshish it is then! Err... how do I get there?
Onama You'll have to get a ship from Joppa. Lovely beaches, sea fishing...
Jonah Only one leper
onama see now your getting it!

Jonah I’m gonna get away from here
I’m gonna see a new horizon
I’m gonna see a different sky up there
Jonah & Think about the great wide world
Onama Think about all that is known
Think about all your hopes and dreams
Think about all you could do
If you had a different view
There’s a hundred places you could be
Onama Just leave it to me... need a donkey?

Storyteller And so under the cover of evenings fading light Jonah packed some things
and quietly left the people of Gath Hepher behind him and headed for
Joppa.

Track - 06 - Jonah Where You Going?

Chorus Jonah, where you going to? Jonah
Where you going now? Jonah
What has God said now?
Jonah, such a hurry now
Jonah, where you going to? Jonah
How can you leave us now?

Yetta oh Jonah. I was baking bread this afternoon and I thought Jonah he needs
to eat more, he's getting all thin and scrawny, wasting away he is, well
I don't need to tell you. People are people I thought and you can't tell
them what to do. So I thought bake him some bread and there I was baking
bread so
Jacob Hey Jonah, where are you headed?
Jonah Oh... nowhere
Jacob Oh come now a man doesn't try to get nowhere in such a hurry! Come and
have a drink with me.
Jonah I was going to The market!
Jacob Sorry?

Chorus Jonah, where you going to?
Jonah where you going now? Jonah?
What has God said now?
Jonah, such a hurry now
Jonah, where you going to? Jonah?
How can you leave us now?

Deborah Jonah? My son still won’t behave...
Jonah Not now! Deborah
Leah Jonah, oh Jonah! I was meaning to ask you this morning but Yetta kept
yabbering on about whatever... where are you going?
Jonah Nowhere!
LEAH Oh come now Jonah! it's halfway to night time you can't be going...
JONAH I was going to the market!!!
LEAH But the markets shut now Jonah!
JONAH OHH!
Chorus Jonah, where you going to? Jonah
Jonah I’ve got to get away from here
Chorus where you going to Jonah?
Jonah I’ve got to find a new horizon
Chorus What has God said now?
Jonah I wanna see a different sky up there
Chorus Jonah, such a hurry now Jonah
Jonah I’ve got to get away from here
Chorus where you going now Jonah?
Jonah I’ve got to find a new horizon
Chorus how can you leave us now?
Jonah I’ve got to leave, I’ve got to leave you now!

Storyteller And so, FINALLY Leaving all the people of Gath Hepher and travelling as
fast as he could Jonah headed in the opposite direction from Gods
command. To Joppa.

[Joppa – A Fishing Village]

Rachel Go on, go on! Get on your precious boat and sail away. Forever! I’ve had
it with you Gal! You come in drunk; you don’t lift a finger around the
house...
Gal But darling, you don’t understand...
Rachel I understand plenty! 'I can’t drink on the boat!' oh poor baby! 'It’s a
hard life at sea' Well it’s no Eden here when you’re gone! Five children
Gal! Sometimes it’s like crossing the desert with you!
Hannah Ozzy!? Don’t go...
Oz I have to I’m a sailor, it's what I do!
Hannah Oh Ozzy!
Gal Is that the same one who saw him off last time?
Ishmael No.
Gal Oi! Oz... The head needs cleaning!
Hannah What the 'head'?
Oz Oh, Err, it's very important... It's a nautical thing.
Gal Yeah! I nearly fell off it the last time I used it, real dangerous!
Isaac Mum!
Isaacs Mum Hurry up! Hurry up! You don’t want to be late. Not after last time!
Isaac But you'll make me look bad in front of the guys.
Isaacs Mum Looks aren't everything! Anyway better to look bad to "The guys" than to
the captain!
Gal It’s been too long
Isaac It’s been too long
Oz & oh Lord! I wanna go back to the sea
Ishmael
Track - 07 - Where The Waves Are Your Only Trouble

Gal There’s a place I know, where I long to go
Where there isn't any trouble or strife
Where the howls and moans are just the wind
Ishmael Not the children or your 'lovely wife'
Oz And you call to shore in a hundred ports
To be sure of a welcome embrace
Gal Of a lovely lass or a comely wench
Each one with a beautiful face

All Back to the sea, where the waves are your only troubles
Back to the sea, where the men are true
Oh it’s been so long; yes it's been too long
Oh I wanna go back to the sea

isaacs mum well come on then... its your part
isaac oh? What should I sing?
Isaacs mum I don't know … make something up! Come on then!

Isaac Though I’m just a kid how I long to go
To the edge of the world and then
Be as far away from this boring place
Oz Though your mother wishes she could come
Ishmael You can hope and dream of a life at sea
But the truth is a different thing
Full of ups and downs on the oceans waves
Gal 'til your lunch comes to visit again

All Back to the sea, where the waves are your only troubles
Back to the sea, it’s a life so rare
Oh it’s been so long; yes it's been too long
Oh I wanna go back to the sea

gal here I got a story for ya. You remember that place, you know east.
Ishmael oh come on gal. Every-where's east around here!

Gal I know a place where the pharaohs face
Looks out over every boat
Standing tall as the sky with staring eyes
Isaac But that beard makes him look like a goat
oz And another place where the jewels they rate
Are the best in all of the world.
Gal But I wouldn't risk my hand for them
Just the women and the beautiful girls

All Back to the sea, where the waves are your only troubles
Back to the sea, raise the sails and fly
Oh it’s been so long; yes it's been too long
Oh I wanna go back to the sea

oz what do you think?
Isaac what?
gal one more time round the main sail?
Ishmael I'm game if you are!
Oz come on then!
all Back to the sea, where the waves are your only troubles
Back to the sea, raise the sails and fly
It’s been so long; yes it's been too long
Oh I wanna go back to the sea
It’s been so long; yes it's been too long
Oh I wanna go back to the sea

Track - 08 - Where The Waves Reprise
Rachel Look at them! Like big kids playing a game.
Hannah It must be a wonderful adventure
Isaacs Mum Adventure? See my Isaac there? Following in his father’s footsteps he is.
Hannah Was he a great sailor too?
Isaacs Mum He could have been, but he didn't get the chance
Hannah Oh?
Rachel You really aren't too bright are you?

Isaacs Mum Back to the sea, it’s a dangerous place to be sure of
Back to the sea, splits man from wife
All hope is lost on a dreadful tide
But their hearts lead them back to the sea
How I wish they'd stay, never go away
Never sail back out to the sea.

Rachel Come on love, let’s get something warm inside you. think I don't know
where Gal hides his wine? Not after six years love!

Jonah Excuse me, I’m looking for a boat
Gal You'll have to do better than that mate
Isaac More boats land here than I’d like to count
Oz That’s 'cause you can’t count!
Ishmael Anyway they’re called ships. It’s unlucky to call 'em boats!
Isaac And 'we sailors' are a superstitious lot!
Jonah Sorry. I’m trying to get to Tarshish.
Isaac Then you’re in luck mate. We’re sailing for Tarshish with the tide.
Gal Oi! Don’t go givin' away births that ain't your to give!
Ishmael True. You'll have to ask the captain.
Jonah Where can I find him?
Oz you're in luck mate he's Right here!
Jonah Hello Sir, I was wondering...
Captain Ready to sail lads?
Jonah Sir! I was wondering...
Captain Lads? You seen any ‘sirs’ round here?
Sailors No Captain!
Captain Look lad I ain’t no sir! I’m the Captain of this fine vessel and no one
calls me sir!
Jonah Captain?
Captain Yes lad
Jonah These men tell me you’re sailing for Tarshish with the tide and I wondered
if, for the right price, obviously, I might travel with you?
Captain The right price eh? Well, obviously, the right price depends on why you
want to join my... happy crew!
Jonah I don’t get you?
Captain Well... these lads sails for free and take a share of the earnings but
they know how and what to do on a ship! This one sails for free and learns
all he can, and this one... he's family and i can't do nothing about that but you? Why would you want a place on board?
Jonah Two hundred is all I have.
Captain I didn't ask how much was in your pocket! Why do you want to sail? Trouble
with a woman? Trouble with the law? There’s always a reason....
Jonah Yes! That’s it! The law or at least you could say that.
Captain then half of your purse will do... and a helping hand. There’ll be no lay-
abouts on my ship. Now look lively boys! there’s no time to waste. Get us
loaded and let’s be on our way.

Track - 09 - Come Away
Captain Come away
Come away
Come my lads it’s time to go
Sailors Away from the world and all its show
Captain Come away we'll leave this shore
Sailors Away to see the land no more hey!
Come away come away
Come away come away

Captain Come my lads and fill the hold
Sailors Fill the hold and sell for gold
Captain Come away the tide is high
Sailors Time to sail the time is nigh
Come away come away
Come away come away
Captain Come my lads, come my lads
All Come away come away
Come away come away
Away!

Storyteller Some say the hardest part of leaving is being left behind but on a clear,
calm night Jonah and his new found shipmates set off on the evening tide.

Track - 10 - Siren Song

women There they go,
Sailing into the horizon
Don’t blink, keep your eyes on your man
As long as you can
There they go
Sailing into the distance
Ignoring all resistance you give
A hard life to live

Hannah how can you go with me loving you so
Young love beating hard in my chest
I hate when you leave you take the breath that I need
And how can I breathe when you're gone
women Come home soon
Come back safe and sound
Come home soon
Let love lead you home
Rachel You're a lush, you’re a drunk
You're a slob, not the hunk that I married when we were still young
But for all of my words I’m still just the girl
Who misses you each time you leave

Women There they go
Sailing into the horizon
Don’t blink, keep your eyes on your man
As long as you can
There they go
Sailing into the distance
Ignoring all resistance you give
A hard life to live

Isaacs Mum He looks like his dad but it just makes me sad
When I think of the years gone by
I love you the most but it’s like loving a ghost
Still lost on the seven seas

Women Come home soon
Come back safe and sound
Come home soon
Let love lead you home
Rachel pointless standing here girls, lets make a brew!
!
Hannah There they go
Sailing into the horizon
Don’t blink

[On Board Ship]
Storyteller Jonah was a good man, a righteous man but he wasn't a sailor man. Jonah had never been on a boat before, never mind out to sea and the experience was somewhat 'draining'!
Ishmael lost my lunch the first time I sailed too! Come to think of it half my
breakfast as well!
Jonah Ugh?
Ishmael Don’t worry mate. You’ll get used to it
Jonah What I don't get is how you know where you're going. It’s been ages since
we saw land. How do you know where we are?
Ishmael We look up mate!
Jonah What?
Ishmael The heavens! We might not know much but we know the stars!
Jonah Uh?
Ishmael Yes sir. A man can get really lost if he doesn't let the heavens guide him.
Jonah If you don’t mind I think I’ll try and get some sleep.

Track - 11 - On A Clear Night
Ishmael On a clear night you can see forever
There’s a heaven older than the mountains
On a clear night
On a clear night
See that star there; we'll follow it ‘til morning
At the sunrise we'll know the east from west
In a clear sky
In a clear sky

The heavens hold its course
The stars know their place
The sun it always rises in the east
And when it sets in the west
You know that it is best
To let the heavens guide you through
Another day

Under these stars a man can see his story
Trace the moments and all he's hoping for
And under that star
A woman waits for me
See that star there; it’s been there through the ages
If I follow I’m sure to reach my home
On a clear night
On a clear night

The heavens hold its course
The stars know their place
The sun it always rises in the east
And when it sets in the west
You know that it is best
To let the heavens guide you through
Another day

Ishmael You know I’d hate to think how lost I’d be without the heavens to guide me.

Track - 12 - A Change In The Wind

Captain No time for your dreaming. That winds picking up!
Gal Picking up too quick for my liking Captain
Ishmael I've never seen the winds change so fast
Isaac And it’s raining too
Captain Keep your heads lads. A strong wind has never bested these sails yet.
Oz Captain, it’s getting worse. Hadn't we better head for the shore?
Captain Hang in there lads. We've seen worse.
Ishmael But this ain’t natural Captain, not to turn so quick!
Isaac I want my mum
Captain Best be praying lads! And drop the cargo!
Gal & Isaac What!
Captain You heard me! There’s no more precious cargo than what’s stored in them skin
sacks you call bodies. Now over the side with it! every last sack and crate
if we have to.
Gal There’s wickedness afoot here captain
Captain There’s no more wickedness here than a foul wind
Isaac There’s rain too!
Gal The gods are angry, there’s no mistake
Captain Stop your whining and strike that sail!
Oz Cast lots Captain the gods will show us who’s to blame!
Captain It would seem the gods have turned their faces to friendlier skies
Gal No Captain the gods will show us true.
Ishmael Here Captain you pick first
Isaac What does it mean if it’s none of us?
Captain Hawl that Jonah to me!
Captain By all the gods Jonah! what have you done! I’ve sailed these waters for too
many years to come undone like this! The day I take you on board the seas turn on me? I’m not one to believe in coincidence Jonah. Who are you?
Jonah I am a Hebrew and I worship the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and
the land.
Captain none of that explains all this
Jonah It is my fault that this great storm has come upon you. Pick me up and throw
me into the sea, it will become calm.
Ishmael I’ll not anger the gods by killing a man. Come on lads to the oars. We’ll get
back to land somehow
Storyteller And they tried but no matter how hard they rowed the storm was too great.
Eventually they gave up and with their last strength they threw Jonah
overboard.
Oz O Lord, please do not let us die for taking this man's life. Do not hold us
accountable for killing an innocent man, for You, O Lord, have done as You
pleased.
Storyteller At that very moment the sea became still
Isaac My gods!
Captain No lad not your gods, nor mine but his god and from this day on my God too.
I’ll serve none other.
Oz so say we all?
All so say we all!

Track - 13 - So Say We All

Captain For years I’ve sailed these waters serving gods of sky and deep
But now I see the waste of all my years
My gods have never moved in ways as powerful as these
So many wasted prayers, but now I see

God of heaven, great and powerful God
There is no other, forgive a foolish man like me
For now I see clear, there are no other gods but You
This is the hour so says my heart

Oz For years I’ve made a sacrifice to the gods of working hands
My soul to keep, oh such a waste,
Now I see in wonder, there is only one true God
I’ve been a fool, but now I see

Oz & God of heaven, great and powerful God
Captain There is no other; forgive a foolish man like me
For now I see clear, there are no other gods but You
This is the hour so says my heart
Isaac I must admit I’ve never served any other gods
But then again I haven’t served you too
I’ve lived my life from day to day, just doing what I can
But without you now, I know, it’s just a waste

Isaac God of heaven, great and powerful God
There is no other, forgive a foolish man like me
For now I see clear, there are no other gods but you
This is the hour so says my heart
Isaac, Oz & God of heaven, great and powerful God
Captain There is no other; forgive a foolish man like me
For now I see clear, there are no other gods but you
This is the hour so says my heart
Gal My family’s my everything, they would think me such a fool
But how can I deny just what I’ve seen
Ishmael I've never stood on holy ground but here upon this deck
I pledge my life to you for now I see
All God of heaven, great and powerful god
There is no other, forgive a foolish man like me
For now I see clear, there are no other gods but you
This is the hour so says my heart

So say we all, there are no other gods but you
So say we all, our course is set and true
So say we all, so say we all, so say we all
So say we all, so say we all, so say we all
So say we all, to you and you alone
So say we all, great king we now enthrone
So say we all, so say we all, so say we all
So say we all, so say we all, so say we all
End Act One
Act Two
Track - 14 - Act Two Fanfare
Track - 15 - The Story So Far
Storyteller To recap...
Jonah was a man a very good man
A man who heard the voice of God
God had a plan, a very good plan
But Jonah didn’t like it one bit
chorus Jonah when down, down, down
To the port of Joppa
Caught a boat, boat, boat
To catch the tide
Jonah ran, ran, ran
But he should have known that
You can’t, can’t, can’t
Run away from God

Storyteller The Captain had a ship, a very fine ship
With good sailors, numbering four
Jonah took that ship, for to make his flight
And they sailed on the break of dawn

Chorus Then came a storm, storm, storm
On that mighty ocean
The sailors tried, tried, tired
To get back to shore
Jonah hid, hid, hid
In the bottom of the boat
But you can’t, can’t, can’t
Hide away from God
Chorus In the end, end, end
Storyteller With no choices left
Chorus The sailors threw, threw, threw
Storyteller Jonah over board
Chorus Jonah sank, sank, sank
Storyteller Deep under the water
Chorus And the storm, storm, storm
Storyteller It died away

storyteller I’d have left it that way too. Jonah disobeyed God and came to a watery end.
The sailors obeyed and were spared. Sounds like a perfectly fair ending to
me.
Chorus NO!
Storyteller No? Well I guess it’s a good thing after all that I’m not God!
As the ship sailed on to Tarshish, Jonahs body sank down and down. Just as
Jonah was taking what he thought was his very last breath God sent a great
whale to swallow him whole. Now don’t start arguing with me about the
differences between whales and fishes, after all what does it matter if it was a fish or a whale, but let me tell you, from where Jonah sat it made no difference at all. Anyway for three days Jonah sat deep down in the belly of this great ... 'creature' . Now the stomach of a whale may not sound like a place of salvation but for Jonah who knew little of the sea it was salvation indeed and he knew it.
[Inside The Whale]

Track - 16 - Jonahs Prayer
Jonah In my distress I call to the Lord
For I know You hear me and You answer my plea
From the depths, from the very heart of the sea
With Your waves and breakers sweeping far over me
Nineveh would be better than this
Your way would be better
Though I’m far from You
I search my God to find You
Though my life, my life it ebbs away
I remember
You alone who saves me
I will turn, turn again to You
I’ve been banished from Your sight
Deep waters all around me and my life it ebbs away
Though I’m far, still I will search for You
I will look again to Your temple oh God
Nineveh would be better than this
Your way would be better
Though I’m far from You
I search my God to find You
Though my life, my life it ebbs away
I remember
You alone who saves me
I will turn, turn again to You
Those who cling to worthless idols
Forgo the grace that You would give
What I have vowed I will hold on to
For my salvation lies in You
Though I’m far from You
I search my God to find You
Though my life, my life it ebbs away
I remember
You alone who saves me
I will turn, turn again to You

Fisherman 1 So if you wanna catch bigger fish...
Fisherman 2 you've gotta use a bigger bait!
Fisherman 1 and if your gonna use bigger bait...
Fisherman 2 you've gotta use a bigger hook!
Storyteller like I said, I’d have left him there but God has a plan for each of us and ...
Fisherman 1 And if I’m gonna use a bigger hook...
Fisherman 2 You’ve gotta use bigger rod!
Fisherman 1 and if your gonna use a bigger rod...
Storyteller And on hearing Jonahs prayer and thanksgiving for saving his life the God of heaven spoke to the whale and it vomited Jonah back onto dry land.
Fisherman 1 And if that’s the size of my bait?
Fisherman 2 We're gonna need a bigger boat!
Jonah Excuse me which way is Nineveh?
Fisherman 2 Err... that way....
Jonah Thanks.
storyteller Now as you can imagine Jonah was a sorry state... mind you so would you be if
you'd spent a weekend in a whales belly but spurred on by this near death
experience Jonah raced on to Nineveh, but the bitter root in Jonahs heart
started to grow again.
Track - 17 - Why Me Pt2
Jonah Why me? Why go to Nineveh?
Why me? It’s not like I’ve been before!
Why go? Why take His word to them?
These guys, these wretched Assyrians
Hate me, me and the Israelites
Why would God want to warn them off?
I mean I’ll go they'll repent and what? God will forgive them?
Why me? I hate these Assyrians
Why should? Why should they get the chance?
Why go, why go to Nineveh!
Nineveh! the heart of Assyria
Wicked, they don’t even care for God
Why me? Why should He let them off ?
Storyteller Now I know what you’re thinking... that’s not what a prophet should think!
But then I guess we all, at sometime, have wondered why God should choose to
do the things He does. Never the less Jonah continued on until he reached
Nineveh. And all he thought of the Ninevites was proved true...
[Nineveh]
Track - 18 – Nineveh

Chorus Nineveh
Nineveh
Every type of sin every type of greed
Every type of lust every dirty deed
Can be brought or sold in Nineveh,
Every rotten soul every wicked heart
Every evil scheme every devious part
Can be made and played in Nineveh,
How bad can a bad place get?
How bad can a bad place get?
Nineveh
Nineveh
A city so big its three days long
Every kind of vice going for a song
There’s no evil like Nineveh,
Try if you like but you just won’t win
No one can resist this kind of sin
No wickedness like Nineveh,
How bad can a bad place get?
How bad can a bad place get?
Jonah Forty days and Nineveh will fall
Chorus How bad can a bad place get?
Jonah Forty days and Nineveh no more
Chorus How bad can a bad place get?
Jonah Forty days and Nineveh will fall
Chorus How bad can a bad place get?
Jonah God of heaven won’t take any more
Chorus How bad can a bad place get?
Jonah Forty days, Forty days!
Chorus How bad can a bad place get?
Jonah Forty days
Storyteller Jonahs message didn't go down too well and he was taken before the king
[The Palace]
King What is this?
Guard 1 A prophet Sire
Guard 2 Say's his names Jonah majesty
King And why do I care?
Guard 1 He's been spreading gossip sire
Guard 2 Malicious gossip Majesty
King So what? This place runs on the stuff
Guard 1 Yes sire but begging your pardon, this is different
Guard 2 What he's saying sire; well it’s disturbing the people
King The people are already disturbed!
Guard 1 Rumour is that he's come along way
Guard 2 And spent three days in the belly of a whale
King Sounds fishy to me, well? What have you got to say for yourself?
Jonah The Lord God of heaven has seen your wickedness
King Everybody has Jonah, they do tours these days.
Jonah Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned.
King Who do you think you are threatening me? Threatening Nineveh!
Jonah Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned.
Guard 1 Majesty, the people believe him
Guard 2 They all do
King As do I.
Track - 19 - Hear Our Cry
King Now let the people of Nineveh hear the word of their king...
Let no man or beast, herd or flock
Taste anything, anything
Let no child of Nineveh feast
Nor water pass their lips
All men must wear the rags of his sin
The sackcloth of his shame
Let all call on God, urgently
Repent now of your ways
May God hear our cry
May God relent
May God hear our cry
For Gods sake
king turn from your wickedness oh Ninevah and repent of your sin for too long our wrong doing has been celebrated but now Ninevah must account for our
trespasses
The sins of our days, our wicked nights
Have found us, found us
Now are we called to account
And no man can pay
May God have compassion
May God relent
May God hear our cry
And turn away
Chorus Hear us,Hear us
Forgive us, Forgive us
King Hear us, Hear us
and Chorus Forgive us, Forgive us
God hear our cry
May God relent
May God hear our cry
For Gods sake
King The sins of our days, our wicked nights
Chorus Hear us
King Have found us, found us
Chorus Hear us
King Now are we called to account
Chorus Forgive us
King And no man
can pay
Chorus Forgive us
King May God have compassion
and Chorus May God relent
May God hear our cry
And turn away
Jonah Why me why go to Nineveh
Why not I’d love to see the walls fall down
I hope everything goes up in flames
Storyteller But the walls did not fall down and the city didn't burn When God saw what
they did and how they turned from their evil ways, He had compassion and did not bring upon them the destruction He had promised.

Jonah Why Lord? This is what I said You'd do
That’s why I tried to get away from here
I knew it, you're gracious and compassionate
Why bother sending me to Nineveh?
When you're slow to anger and full of love,
Why God? Why not tear this city down
The Voice Have you any right to be angry?
of God

[Outside The City]
Storyteller Having no answer, or at least none that he wished to share, Jonah ran from the city but still hoping that God would do something, anything. Jonah made for himself a shelter and sat down to watch. Jonah may have been a bad sailor
but he made an even worse builder but God yet again came to Jonahs aid and
provided a vine to shelter his head from the sun.
Jonah Ah.

Storyteller Evening came and nothing happened, night came and nothing happened. Jonah
slept but during the night God sent a worm who chewed through the vine and
caused it to wither and die. In the morning a blazing sun rose and a scorching wind came from the east .Without the shade of the vine Jonah became faint and if possible even more angry.
Track - 20 - Hear Me
Jonah Hear me, hear me
Take me, take me
What good is it that I should live?
Or take another breath
Why should it be that they should live?
All they deserve is death
Better now that I should die
Than have to bear this sin
Forgiveness given to such as these
Enslavers of my kin
Hear me, hear me
Take me, take me
These murderers these infidels
Who stood against your own
Now call you Lord, what lies, what lies
Yet forgiveness lets them go
Have I been wrong, no, it cannot be
These aren't the chosen few
They hated us, they've murdered us
And yet you make them new?
Hear me, hear me
Take me, take me
God take my life, I’ve no use for it
God take me now, I can’t bear it
How you would save them after all that they've done I don’t know
That you could forgive all they are I just can’t understand
Hear me, hear me
Hear me, hear me
The Voice Do you have a right to be angry about the vine? You have been concerned
of God about this vine, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang
up and died overnight. But Nineveh has more than a hundred and twenty
thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, and many
cattle as well. Should I not be concerned about that great city?
Storyteller Put in his place yet again Jonah felt the remorse of his wrong doing...
Jonah Will you please stop doing that?!
Storyteller What!?
Jonah Stop doing, that!
Storyteller Excuse me?
Jonah I mean! You stand there telling it like, “look a Jonah what an idiot”, I didn't ask to do this you know! I didn't ask to come to these “assyrians”
Storyteller these “people”
Jonah these.... people!?, they're not “my people”
Storyteller you say that as if it make a difference? These people..like Yetta? Like Jacob? These people who need God. who need ... you.
Jonah but why me, THIS ISN'T EASY YOU KNOW!
Storyteller I know.
Jonah Oh yeah?
Storyteller Yes.

Track - 21 – Change in us
Storyteller its in the change from becoming to being
its in the pathway from once
to the here and now
knowing that learning is always the answer
who we were once doesn't have to be who we are
Who we are
how we see things
is all in the viewpoint
how we react
is all in the person we are
who we are
knowing the answer
is not as important
as finding the difference
that becomes the change in us
the change in us
its the inversion of hatred to kindness
its the revolve of direction
from there to here
taking off blinkers to take in the vision
staunch held positions give way to an open mind
maybe kind
how we see things
is all in the viewpoint
how we react
is all in the person we are
who we are
loving and giving
don't come from commandment
choosing another ones wealth
becomes the change in us
the change in us

Jonah i see the man that i once was
so set and so sure of his mind
i see with shame that i can't hide
no matter how hard i might
no matter how hard i might
Storyteller how we see things
& Jonah is all in the viewpoint
how we react
is all in the person we are
who we are
loving and giving
don't come from commandment
choosing another ones wealth
becomes the change in us
the change in us
King Come Jonah! Celebrate with us. God has done a good thing!
[Nineveh]
